Job Summary:
The Cultural Heritage Archivist is responsible for the preservation and management of valuable cultural artifacts and materials within the library and information science field. This role focuses on organizing, cataloging, and maintaining collections that contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage. The Cultural Heritage Archivist works closely with colleagues to ensure the accessibility and long-term conservation of these items.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement preservation strategies to safeguard cultural heritage materials, including physical artifacts, documents, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and other relevant materials.
2. Catalog and classify cultural heritage collections according to established standards and systems, ensuring accurate and consistent metadata.
3. Assess the condition of cultural heritage materials, identifying preservation needs and implementing appropriate conservation measures.
4. Create and maintain accurate documentation and records related to cultural heritage collections, including acquisition, accessioning, and deaccessioning processes.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide expert advice on the handling, storage, and display of cultural heritage materials.
6. Conduct research and analysis to identify relevant historical, cultural, and social contexts associated with the archival materials.
7. Develop and deliver educational programs, workshops, and exhibitions to promote public engagement and awareness of cultural heritage collections.
8. Stay updated with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the field of cultural heritage archiving, and apply this knowledge to enhance archival processes.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, History, or a related field. A Master's degree is highly preferred.
2. Proven experience (X years) working with cultural heritage materials in a professional archival setting.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices, including familiarity with relevant metadata schemas and cataloging systems.
4. Strong understanding of preservation and conservation techniques for various types of cultural heritage materials.
5. Proficiency in using archival management systems and software for cataloging, such as ArchivesSpace, PastPerfect, or similar.
6. Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accurate and consistent cataloging and documentation.
7. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment, demonstrating excellent communication, interpersonal, and project management skills.
8. Strong research skills with the ability to identify and analyze historical and cultural contexts associated with archival materials.
9. Familiarity with emerging technologies and their application in cultural heritage preservation and access.
10. Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying updated with current trends in the field.
